Building History
The double wide, Romanesque Revival style carriage house at 153-157 East 69th Street was built in 1884 by German American architect William Schickel. This property is situated in a "stable row" on one of the Upper East Side blocks where Upper Fifth Avenue's elite kept their horses and carriages during the gilded age. Nearly a century after its build, the cavernous building became the studio of Mark Rothko, one of the preeminent artists of his generation.
